A method to ensure uniformity and consistency in product appearance
Most products need to conform to some aesthetic standard. Examples shown here are in carpet tile and timber veneer manufacture.
In both cases customers expect that the product is aesthetically uniform and pleasing.
For carpet tile, the objective is to ensure pattern and color consistency and the absence of defects.
In timber veneer, the objective was to match similar patterns for furniture and decrorative surface consistency.
Both of these objectives require complex image processing techniques.
In timber veneer, it was necessary to "learn" characteristics of adjacent sheets by color and grain pattern. The sheets were then graded and assigned to appropriate product lines.
These systems could be fitted to existing production lines without major modification. Line scan imaging systems are very compact and easy to deploy when correctly specified and set up.
In both cases the existing operating team were successfully trained to manage the imaging system and the data processing and management functions.
